5 PACKING HACKS TO SIMPLIFY YOUR MOVE

Ms. Rita Rents

5PackingHacksCoverI have never met anyone who looks forward to the process of moving. Somehow the stuff you moved in with has multiplied 10 fold and inevitably, you’ll find boxes from the last move that haven’t even been opened yet! Although I haven’t done a lot of moving, when I did, I did a few easy things that saved my bacon in the process. Here are a few of the best things I did to keep my move a little smother:

Packing

1. DO NOT BUY FILLER OR BUBBLE WRAP:

a. You have more fillers in your house than you know what to do with.

  • Towels
  • Rags
  • Blankets
  • Sheets
  • Shirts
  • Hoodies
  • Socks

b. NOTE: Don’t use these fillers for boxes you plan on storing though, you’ll never find your favorite hoodie again :o).

Content

2. WRITE ON 4 SIDES OF THE BOX +  CONTENTS

a. What room it goes in
b. Full contents on one side of the box.
c. Either write on the box, or put a sticky on each box and as you put something in it, write on the sticky and tape it to the box when it is closed. You won’t lose things that way!

3. GIVE IT, TOSS IT, RE-PURPOSE IT!

a. If you haven’t used something in over a year and it isn’t memorabilia, DO NOT PACK IT! I have carried so much junk from place to place it is crazy. Then I unpack it and think, “why did I pay to move this?”

International Youth Day

4. START 30 DAYS IN ADVANCE:

a. Set a goal to pack at least 3 boxes a day until you move.
b. If you have a big house or a lot of stuff, you may need to increase your daily goal.
c. This way it isn’t overwhelming!

MovingDayEsentials

5. MOVING DAY ESSENTIAL’S BOX

a. As you are packing, there are essential items that you will want and NEED for the day of the move. Don’t burry it amongst a thousand boxes, be prepared and put them all together in a clear box that is labeled – MOVING DAY and put it in an easy to find place in your car and deliver it with the first load and put it in a central location easy to find:

  • Toilet paper
  • Paper cups
  • Paper Plates
  • Napkins/Paper Towels
  • Disposable utensils
  • Bottle opener
  • Box knives
  • Scissors
  • Moving gloves
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Soap
  • Lotion
  • Band-Aids
  • Medicine bag with standard essentials
  • Phone chargers
  • Trash bags
  • Necessary pet supplies like food and leash
  • Small overnight bag with pj’s, toiletries, an outfit for tomorrow
  • Small tool kit with screwdriver, hammer, etc.
